KEYNOTE SPEAKER
FRANK H. WU

Only the second Chinese American dean of a US law school, Frank Wu was appointed to lead Wayne State University Law School in 2004, after nearly a decade teaching at historically black Howard University in Washington, DC. As an instructor, writer, thinker, and practitioner, Dean Wu has kept a sharp focus on the critical importance of race relations, believing that we can improve society when we turn theory into action. A leading proponent of affirmative action, ending racial profiling, and Asian American visibility, he has published and appeared in national media ranging from National Public Radio to “The O’Reilly Factor.” Growing up in metropolitan Detroit, he chose a career in law after witnessing up close the injustices of the Vincent Chin trial, and after leaving Wayne State, he will be working on a book about the case. His previous work includes the critically-acclaimed Yellow: Race in America Beyond Black and White.

HONORING
HYPHEN magazine for their culturally and politically savvy coverage of Asian America. In its sixth year, Hyphen continues to cover art, politics, and pop culture in a manner that reflects a multiethnic and socially conscious Asian American community.

The Legal Team at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP for their work on the Asian American amicus brief (friend of the court) in support of the California Marriage Cases, which seeks to win the freedom to marry for lesbian and gay couples through the California State Supreme Court.

Him Mark Lai for a lifetime of dedication, passion, and commitment to researching and documenting the Chinese American experience. Lai has been writing and teaching about the history of Chinese Americans since the 1960s. His work will soon be available online through the Him Mark Lai Digital Archive Project.
