• Advocates for Census outreach call for funding from state and local governments in response to Supreme Court decision prohibiting sampling in the 2000 Census
• CAA appointed Co-Chair of Advisory Committee to San Francisco’s First Source hiring program for low-income residents.

February
• CAA organizes Chinese New Year Celebration in Visitacion Valley
• CAA Executive Director speaks at California Studies Conference, at UC Berkeley
• CAA and MALDEF form the California Complete Count Coalition, a statewide coalition of community organizations aimed to improving undercounted populations in the 2000 Census

March
• CAA Strategic Plan Staff and Board Retreat 
• ‘Youth Perspectives on Affirmative Action & Equality” Panel jointly sponsored by CAA, Television Race Initiative, Intergroup Clearinghouse and KQED
• CAA Executive Director appears on nationally televised Fred Friendly Seminar, “Beyond Black & White. . .”
• In response to CAA request, State Auditor agrees to review state and local governments’ compliance with the Dymally-Allatorre Bilingual Access law

• CAA files opposition to NAACP-Ho school desegregation settlement for failing to meet the needs of language minority students
• CAA organizes meetings to respond to Wen Ho Lee allegations
• CAA Executive Director on KQED Forum show regarding citizenship.
• A.L.L. coordinates largest career fair to date at Galileo Academy
• CAA staff speaks at Grassroots Immigrant Summit 
• San Francisco State University establishes program with CAA to recruit low-income individuals for employment

May
• CAA Policy Advocate provides Census 2000 trainings to School District Language Academy staff serving hardest-to-count populations
• CAA staff collaborates with Geneva Valley Development Corp to ensure equal access to public housing projects
• CAA Policy Director provides keynote address at the California Association of Equal Rights Professionals conference

June
• CAA celebrates 30 proud years at Sheraton Palace with Assemblyman Mike Honda
• CAA Executive Director speaks at National Education Association Conference in Orlando, Florida regarding affirmative action 
• After months of CAA advocacy, state legislature passes budget that provides $24.7 million for Census outreach.  San Francisco, Alameda, San Mateo, and Santa Clara agree to provide local funding to community organizations to increase Census participation
• CAA Policy Director addresses national Jewish groups 
• CAA begins collaborative project with Community Boards and Intergroup Clearinghouse in Visitacion Valley

July
• CAA receives complaint about hate crimes flyer in San Francisco’s Sunset neighborhood, organizes community response
• San Francisco agrees to create a Bilingual Election Coordinator position to increase voting access for Chinese American citizens at the urging of CAA
• CAA organizes events urging the Senate to confirm Bill Lann Lee

August
• CAA co-hosts Bayview community forum on district elections with San Francisco  Foundation, ROSES, Center for Democracy  and Voting, and CAVEC
• CAA participates in Sunset Neighborhood Unity Walk to respond to hate crimes flyer
• CAA partners with META to organize opposition to appointment of Marian Bergeson to State Board of Education 
• CAA participates in community meetings regarding San Francisco student assignment plan
• CAA leads coordination of 1999 Visitacion Valley Neighborhood Day, which celebrates diversity

September
• CAA publishes Chinese and English brochures on the importance of Census 2000 and San Francisco District Elections
• CAA Executive Director speaks at California Asian Employees Association Conference

October
• CAA works with Supervisor Mabel Teng and Mayor Willie Brown to introduce Equal Access to Services Act
• CAA Executive Director addresses Jewish Community Center on hate crimes
• CAA negotiates agreement with UCSF to use community organizations to help place workers to build its new Mission Bay campus to ensure economic opportunities for low-income San Franciscans

November
• State audit, requested by CAA, issues report that most state agencies are not providing services to limited English individuals as required by the Dymally-Alatorre law
• CAA monitors San Francisco election and discovers that city failed to translate key materials, including absentee ballots, into Chinese as required by the Voting Rights Act
• CAA and Intergroup Clearinghouse honored by Organization of Chinese Americans for work in Visitacion Valley
• CAA facilitates Californians Together, statewide coalition of educators and activists advocating for quality education for all English Language Learners
• Asian Art Museum designates CAA as the lead community agency responsible for recruiting workers to renovate its new location

December
• CAA hosts Thank You Dinner for Major Donors at The House, in North Beach
• CAA Policy Advocate develops parent survey to gather data for Asian Pacific Islander Education Summit
• CAA Executive Director and Board members attend and speak at conference in Havana, Cuba hosted by the International Society for the Study of Chinese Overseas.
